First Responder Vehicles

These vehicles are used for a variety of purposes, the most important being to allow medically trained personnel access to quicker more maneuverable vehicles.  This allows the medical attention you might require to arrive at the scene on a more rapid basis.  These vehicles are stocked with equipment similar to ambulances but are not certified by the Texas Department of Health to transport people to the hospital.  An ambulance will follow one of these vehicles and the occupants of a first responder vehicle may assist in the transport via ambulance.  Click here to see more pictures that show an example of how our medic units are equipped.

Ambulances

All of West Harris County EMS ambulances are equipped with 'Frazer Bilt' and AEV boxes that are mounted on 1 ton or greater Ford chassis.  These units are Type III ambulances stocked with MICU (Mobile Intensive Care Unit) level equipment.  Click here to see more pictures that show how an example of how our ambulances are equipped.

Utility Vehicles

Currently WHCEMS has a single Utility truck that is used for the multitude of daily chores that keep an EMS service going.  It is also available to bring equipment to the scene when a large number of patients are involved and the supplies on the ambulances and first responder vehicles are taxed.

The history of the ambulance begins in ancient times, with the use of carts to transport incurable patients by force. Ambulances were first used for emergency transport in 1487 by the Spanish, and civilian variants were put into operation in 1887. Advances in technology throughout the 19th and 20th centuries led to the modern self-powered ambulances.
